What is there to do in and around Auckland?

Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific What is there to do in and around Auckland?

I'm flying into Auckland on February 6th and spending 2 weeks around there before I depart to Australia. I'm basically wondering if anyone had some suggestions on some things to do around that area. I don't know anything about New Zealand, so I was wondering if there were any sort of interesting things to see in and around Auckland (I know there is, and I sound like a fool, but I didn't know if there were particular "must sees").

Anything would be appreciated!

I leave Oz on 28th Jan to go to NZ for 3 weeks. Im not sure what to do or see in NZ yet. Let me know if you get any good ideas, been trying to read the guide books but there is too much info!

Hullo. I was in auckland 2 weeks ago - here's a few things you can do that I enjoyed:

- Take a boat to Rangitoto island (an extinct volcano) or Waiheke island (a fun little hippy-type place) or do both in one day with the kawau kat company, get tickets by pier 2 at the ferry terminal.

- Go to Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Adventure and Underwater World - they have a penguin display that you ride around in an automated snowcat thingy and a big shark tunnel.

- Go up the skytower (the biggest building in the southern hemisphere - you can jump off if you're feeling really adventurous).

- Wander around Auckland Domain which is a pretty nice big park.

BTW 2 weeks is a long time to spend in Auckland. I reckon a trip to either the bay of islands or the coromandel peninsula would be a worthwhile diversion.

Don't spend too much time in Auckland itself, unless u love the city, shopping, going out etc. and u wanna miss out on the 'real New zealand'

definitely go to:

Bay of Islands and then up north to Cape Reinga (there are great offers including sandsurfing etc.).

It must be great up there, bec it will be in the middle of the summer!!!

Coromandel would be another nice idea, but that's a bit further away.

If you need any more advice, send me a mess, because I will live in NZ from the 13th dec on. :-)

have fun

personally i thougth kelly tarltons was a waste of 17 nzd.
totally disapointed.
but ya 2 weeks is long in auckland but to do in teh area:

-go see an allblacks match.
-auckland museam is great.
-trip to coromandel
-bay of islands
-definatly goto waiheke for a day($20 return)
hostel is only about 19 nzd and right by the cute little beach.
-at the harbour near the ferries you can
take a dolphin swim/whale watch trip.
-local beaches like Piha.
-matamata is only a few hours away and u can visit hobbiton:P
from lord of the rings.
-Rotorua is a must see!!!! try to get down there to see the

Waiheke Isl. is nice but not a 'must do' I think.
And definitely dont stay in the YHA!!!!

The beaches on the Westcoast of Auckln. are really nice (black sand)

but why I'm responding to this mess again:

lived 5min.from ┬┤Hobbiton' and it was nice to see the movie set, but it's just another expensive trip to see one of the 'Lord of the Ring' locations!!!!
Dont go there if it's not on ur way! My boyfriend used to say: it's just a few holes in the ground ;)

I may be the only one, but I really enjoyed black water rafting through the Waitomo caves. A bit of a trip from Auckland, but it was worth it. Nice scenery along the way, too!

I once stayed seven hours in Auckland and slept at the airport. Otherwise, I watched some cows graze in a nearby field.
