Going to Canada...

Travel Forums North America Going to Canada...

A bunch of friends and I are planning to go to Vancouver, Canada this summer for a 3 month holiday. We are all students and hope to work while we are there to fund our stay. We are all from Ireland and as there is a SWAP program between the 2 countries we can purchase Open Work Visas for 400 euros, allowing us to stay there up to a full year and work wherever we like and switch jobs if needed, without having a pre placed job before we go over...

However, I am both and Irish and American citizen and after extensive research I could only find some information as the consulate is now running more internet-based than over the phone. I think (although not positive) that as an American, I can stay for up to 180 days in Canada without a visa, however I would not be able to work during that time (unless it would be under the table). Also applying for a work visa requires a pre placed job, which I cannot find at the moment...

Anyway, the visa costing 400 euros, (600 CAD), and minimum wage in Vancouver (British Columbia) being 8CAD, i was wondering does anyone know how much a work visa would cost if I could find a pre placed job and also if it would be wise to go under the 180 day non-work entry and try to find work under the table...Also I am not sure if all of this information is 100%...any experience or advise would be kindly appreciated.

As the bureaucratic process could take some time i'd get on it right away..

Americans can stay in Canada up to 6 months a year. You need a work visa to work in Canada. Vancouver has a lot of tourist so I would assume that it isn't difficult to obtain one.
