Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific Going to East AUS and NZ Feb-April. Is my budget adequate?

Hey everybody, first time post!

So I'm leaving for Sydney Feb.1 and making my way up to Cairns. Then flying over to Auckland, busing it (unless I can afford to rent a car which will be unlikely) down to Christchurch and flying back to Sydney for my return flight back to Canada! Will be backpacking, I also have a great tent and all this top of the line camping stuff to go with it so I'm hoping to cut down on hostel costs a little bit and camp whenever it's safe and available. Plan on using the Greyhound bus service in AUS.

My budget after taking into account transportation expense is this:
$60/day for food/accommodation/entertainment
$1,000 for scuba diving (I will need to get certified)
$1,500 for extra activities along the way as the $60/day won't cut it for all the tours and extras.

Any thoughts on this budget guys? Not that I can do much to change it, that's all the money I have and the flight is already booked. I guess the question is, will I come home with debt?

Sounds quite reasonable, especially since you're budgetting separately for extra activities. Obviously it's still possible to go way over the $60/day by eating out or going out, but as long as you keep a weather eye on your actual expenses as they happen, I'd say you should be absolutely fine.

I think this budget sound fine.. the lonely planet guide reckons on $50-70 a day but that is taking everything into account and seeing as you have extra cash for trips and stuff i'd say you will be fine with that. Camping where possible will help too. I don't think i will have anywhere near that daily budget for when i go in July!!
