I believe Portugal is still quite affordable. Would love to go there myself ;)

if its ireland ur flying out of , a good thing and cheap thing to do would be to fly ryanair down to malaga, their about 99 cent at the mo, then cross over to morocco. itll still be round 16-20 degrees during the day time and its really cheap for food and accomodation, could do worse i suppose

Hey dude, If you want to go to southern Europe go to Portugal. It's one of the cheapest places to go to (Except the Algarve totally in the south). I've been in Portugal twice and I'va had a wicked time. The people are just way more friendly than the Spanish. I've been in Barcelona and around too. Nice city with lots of stuff to do but quite more expensive than Oporto in Portugal. Good luck mate and have fun

Portugal is a good choice, although the best time to come here is definitely Summer, or pre-Summer (from May on). If you have some luck with the weather you could actually get some mild and sunny days. You could come to Lisbon for a few days, visit some places around Lisbon and then head to southern Spain (Seville, Granada, and possibly Madrid).

Still I think your cheapest option in Europe is not Portugal (although it's pretty cheap). If you're really on a tight budget eastern europe is the place to go. You could buy an interrail pass and easily visit Budapest-Prague-Kracow / Warsaw in 3 weeks, which are quite nice places to visit (altough probably pretty cold in January).

This is also a good choice if you're into the kind of trip where besides some culture dip you want to have a good taste of nightlife, bar hopping, beautiful girls, etc.

Have fun, wherever you go
