I was wondering.. I have been planing to go on tour with a friend around spain.. But I don't speak a word of Spanish, when doing something like this is it quite straight foward to pick up the cal languages? Thanks! I would really like to hear your experiences
I wouldn't say it's straightforward - you do have to make an effort. Any practice you do before hand will be invaluable one you're there. Even knowing the basics like "Could I have two beers please?" will get you a long way The main trick in my opinion is to not be worried about making a fool out of yourself !
I was on the way to Madrid, and the bus was stopped by police on a very remoted speedway. They checked the passengers` passports one by one. I handed on mine, but a policeman shouted at me just after one slight look at it. He asked me to get off immediately without giving me any excuse. I was so very puzzled, and then two policemen began to roar to me in Spanish. I couldn`t understand a single word and tried to communicate with them in English and in gestures. But they totally ignored me, and kept on roaring on their own. I asked for help from others around, but they couldn`t speak English either. Luckily, I suddenly recovered from their language violence and showed them my ID card. They finally calmed down and turned into a better attitude. I`ve never been treated like that before as a young girl. What if I forgot the ID card thing and was driven out of the bus at midnight in the remoted Spanish land?
