After I register I should be ok, but I'll take your advice and keep all receipts and tickets along the way for back up. I'll be on a business visa too. Though I'm not sure that makes much difference.

I'll be sleeping in the car most nights and living out of truck stops when I pass them. If I learn the right phrases and point at what most of them are eating, then I'm hoping for some good meals. I also cook my own food - but normally at the end of the day.

On a trip of this kind there will always be the possibility of some occasional trouble. The trick is not to let it rule the day, otherwise it will spoil the trip and there'd be no point in going. Most people who have done what I'm planning have said it was fine, though a Russian and a Polish friend both said don't do it. But I'm careful in my habits, especially with money and documents and most people ignore me - maybe because I look poor and harmless. I really appreciate the concern though. Thanks.

Nearly forgot - can either of you tell me how much I should expect to pay for accommodation in St Petersburg? I'm looking for very cheap and it doesn't have to be central as I'd use the metro. Thanks. ;)

Summer is a high season here in St-Petersburg,
The prices are about 50% higher then. and everything needs booking beforehand.
Last summer i found a nice clean mini-hotel in the middle of the city (old center) for about 70 USD, which was a good luck.
If boking beforhand and away from the center i think you can find even cheaper hotels.
Let me know when you get exact dates, and i will send you a few links.
Best regards,
Tory.
