I am planning a holiday in Melbourne in April and need assistance in estimating travel costs, etc.
I plan to travel from Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea to Cairns and than hop on a train to Melbourne. What are the possibilities of doing that? What is the best advice?
How long will it take by train from Cairns to Melbourne? What is the average fare to pay?
What other affordable options are there for me to get to Melbourne?
I would be grateful if you could assist in providing the required information for me.
If you really want to catch the train from Cairns to Melbourne you will need to take 3 separate trains (Melbourne to Sydney, Sydney to Brisbane and then Brisbane to Cairns). This website suggests it would take 3 and a half days, with overnight stopovers in Brisbane and Sydney.
I imagine (if you don't want to see anything on the way), it would be much cheaper to fly direct between the two cities, as well as much quicker. I put in some dates in April using Virgin Blue, and flights came up about $209 one way.
Why not try a rental car relocation?
They can cost as little as $1 day, there is a booking fee and you may have to pay for your own fuel but it'd be a betterway to see the country rather than being stuck in a cabin?
Try these guys
The bus is quite comfortable too
