Kathmandu to Lhasa. Cheap overland tour options?

Travel Forums Asia Kathmandu to Lhasa. Cheap overland tour options?

Hi all,

Im starting my trip in Kathmandu, and heading into Lhasa.

I have been recomended before that the best way to travel overland is to join a tour group.

From doing a little research, all I can find are ones that are around £1000 per person, which is way too much considering we are continuing on through asia after that for a year.

Does anyone know of any good and (more importantly) CHEAP tours?
Or is there a train that is a better option?

Thanks!

Lucy

To visit Tibet, you need a Tibet permit which you can get only in Kathamandu. There are many travel agents in Kathmandu who will arrange your Tibet permit and also your transport to Tibet. Visit some of these travel agents then you can decide who offers cheapest. Price of 1000 pounds per person is undoubtedly a rip off.

There is no train but there is a flight operated by a Chinese airlines but not everyday.

Hope this helps.

Wow! A thousand pounds sounds like hella for Tibet. I am sure when you get there there will be better prices. It also helps if you know someone that speaks the language and can negotiate a better price. You bargain for pretty much everything over here.
Hope that helps. Have fun on your trip

I plan on doing the same thing and have heard you can get a budget tour for approx £200-£300. We are planning to continue into China rather than returning to Kathmandu. This is the more difficult part, I have more or less given up on getting any useful information on doing this and we plan to just try and sort something out when we're there. Good luck with your plans.
