Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean South America - advice

Hello,

I am off to South America in Feb and was wondering if anyone can recommend a good hostel in Rio, that is in a good location.

Also does anyone know the best way to get from Buenos Aires to La Paz? Is there an easy bus or train route?

Any other advice is welcome :-)

The Mango Tree in Ipanema is great. Stayed 10 days there.
Enjoy
ps Can you let us know if you get any replies re BA to la paz. We are planning on going from salta( argentina) to uyuni by bus and train and then on to la paz and quito.

I stayed at Mellow Yellow hostel. It's in Copacabana, 2 minutes walk from the beach. Good atmosphere, lots of excursions available. Rooms get a bit stuffy and sweaty but it doesn't matter if you use the room only to sleep. The birds behind the front desk are nice eye candy too.

I have only stayed at this hostel in Rio, so I couldn't compare it to others. I'd stay there again though.

Hey Magpie - is the Mango Tree close to the beach and safe area? I am just worried as I am travelling on my own. Also hopefully someone can help us with travel options :)

Regarding BsAs to La Paz...

Take the bus to Salta, then another bus to La Quiapa on the border. You then cross to Villazon (not sure if I spelt this one right!) in Bolivia and you can then either go straight to Uyuni by bus or stop off in Tupiza (quite a nice place to do some horse riding in the canyons) then train to Uyuni and bus to La Paz.

We stopped quite a while in Salta and obviously did the Salar tour - your other option would be a Salar de Uyuni tour which starts in Tupiza and ends in Uyuni. Make sure you spend some time in Salta...a really nice place. I'd also advise trying to squeeze Mendoza in too before Salta for the winery tours!
