Hi all,

We are getting married in May and for honeymoon heading to Australia for 3 weeks and hiring a motorhome to drive from Sydney to Cairns. Does anyone have any recommendations on must see places to stop at on our way up? Also is it advisable to stay at campsites or is it safe enough to park up anywhere

Thanks
Garry

Hey i would personally buy Lonely planet: East coast of Australia, me and gf took that when we did 4weeks sydney to cairns march/april 2009. Gives lots of ideas, places to stop, highlights, however you will also find places on your own.
Personally we stayed at campsites, a few nights we stayed at rest points where other people and other campers were. only one night did we feel unsafe due to being a long way from anywhere!
We are going to sydney march and travelling in a camper up the coast to cairns again for 3 and half weeks. Will let you know of any good points to stop.
We found a great campsite a few metres from the beach in Yepoon, 40km east of rockhampton i believe. We looked out of the camper in the morning with the beach just there. was great. went swimming although warned about jelly fish. would recomend a stop there. I liked Byron bay, the atmosphere was great for chilling out as well as partying in the evenings if thats your thing.
Would recomend Australia zoo also. loads to see and do.
Hope that jumbled mess helps.

Thanks very much will get a copy and have a look!! As for parking up think my gf would prefer campsites but the idea of waking up to an amazing beach and going for a swim sounds class!! Yeah we plan to visit Australia zoo, bit if the route we where planning but I reckon well worth it!!

Thanks again

The things I enjoy on the east coast are:
- Cairns for access to Great Barrier Reef, Cape Tribulation, Atherton Tablelands and Mission Beach
- Airlie Beach for access to the Whitsundays
- Mackay for access to Eungella NP
- Fraser Island
- Byron Bay
- Nelson Bay
- Blue Mountains

You'll be able to park in rest areas on the way down especially in more remote areas, around towns I think it's more advisable to stop in campsites or caravan parks.

You should definitely go to all these places. Most of the cities along the coast are lovely and the people are generally quite friendly. When you get to Airlie Beach, make sure you head out to one of the islands and do some snorkelling!
