Bunk backpacker hostel in brisbane... Well not much to say apart from that I have never experienced such a terrible accommodation provider or nightlife venue in my 6 and a half years of backpacking the globe.

To start with check in - customer service.. Please, your local phone provider which all of us wish we could totally live without has a better response rate to queries and requests than this lame excuse for a backpacking haven.

I would have rather pulled up a cardboard box out the front than ever step foot in this discraceful place again.

Just to give you one example... myself and my female companion who were staying for only 2 nights decided to go to the bar / nightclub in the complex (I beleive the name was Birdie num num), however, after 1 drink we were told to leave. At this point my female companion who became quite distressed questioned the overgrown thug of a security guard the reasoning for our hasty departure, which he replied you just do not fit in with 'our type'.

At this point the bouncer in questioned grabbed my arm along with 3 of his thuggish partners in crime to redirect my feet in an awark manner down a 10 feet flight of stairs. Just to confirm I am no drunk that you would find on the street, and actually a very well respected writer within the travel industry.

The main purpose for my post within this forum is to not only warn others about the type of behaviour that was carried out by the staff of this company, but to always beware that no matter where you may go in the world even in a nice city such as Brisbane, Australia... you must always keep an eye out for people who will take advantage of your situation just because you are a backpacker!

Hey, sorry to hear you had such a bad experience at Bunk. Im travelling to Brisbane on the 22nd of February and Bunk was one of the hostals i was looking forward to staying at!

I have heard a lot of good things about this hostal and all online reviews i have read have been very positive. Was it because of that one event that ruined your stay there or was the whole experience a nightmare?

@tcscaff Hi, I had also read and heared a number of good reviews, however, not only was this experience just unpleasant my entire stay was just not what it was cracked up to be.

But if you must give it a go you may have a better time than I did.

Clearly without a real name or any kind of proof of what exactly happened in this case, readers should treat 'reviews' like this with a grain of salt. It could just as easily be a competitor down the street posting here to give this property a bad name. That kind of thing is common on lots of the hotel/hostel review sites that allow anyone to post a review.

All I can say with certainty is that in the past 6 months 119 guests that actually stayed at Bunk gave it an average rating of 81%, which is quite good (6th of all hostels in Brisbane).

It's getting more and more important to keep the accountability of the reviewer in mind when reading reviews online. Front desk staff often have a lot of time on their hands in slow hours, and there's a lot of upside to them reviewing their own property and their competitors. Only in cases where reviews are actually based on bookings can you be more certain that the reviews are legit.

All that isn't to say this review isn't correct, but just that reviews like this in open forums need to be treated with caution.

I stayed in Bunk and to say I was unhappy is an understatement. I am a girl and was travelling alone during the summer and as such always booked into female dorms. When I got there, I was told to wait and that there possibly was no bed available. I must stress that at this point I was pulling from my bag the confirmation I received over a week previously which stated a bed was secured for me. After about an hour, I was told they could squeeze me into a mixed dorm. As it was pouring rain and I have been travelling for most part of a day I accepted. What I was actually given was a spare bed in a male dorm full of workers from different parts of the world who were working on some construction project. When I complained to reception I was told it was this or find another hostel.
I have done a lot of travelling alone, and have never come across this way of treating paying customers.
Bunk is not somewhere I would recommend - ever.
