Travel Forums Europe Best places to visit in Europe?

Hello,

First I will start by saying that I will be leaving at the end of August to study at the university of Freiburg in Germany for a year. I just want to know if people can give me suggestions for places to visit while I'm there. Maybe a top 10 or 20 places that you would recommend. Also considering my home base will be southern Germany, could you include whether it would be more efficient and cheaper to fly to these places of take a train. I assume with farther away places that I could just use Ryan Air or some other cheap airline.

Thanks

Best place to visit in Europe:

1.Interlaken, Switzerland: Right in the Alps region. All around gorgeous place, perfect for all adventure sports. I recommend staying at The Riverlodge, very nice dorm-style cabins, near to the train station and on the river.
2.Nice, France- Plenty of beautiful sandy or rock and cave beaches to relax on, also has adventure sports. You can go to Monaco for a night of gambling if your into that.
3.Paris, France
4.Rome, Italy
5.The Amalfi Coast, Napoli, Capri- these are all close together and offer beautiful views of Italy. Also, Pompeii is nearby.
6.Barcelona- Interesting city with plenty to do and great architecture
7.Amsterdam- great for bike riding
8.Cinque Terre, Italy- Is supposed to be awesome. There is a trail that connects the five cities.

As far as best rates goes, you'd have to research that. It just depends. Ryan Air does have great rates, but do you want to have to deal with the airport every time you go out of town? Trains offer more excitement in my opinion. You can make unexpected stops to explore, if you miss one connection there is always another one you can take not long after, and in most cases you do not have to have your luggage searched or comply to packing regulations. If you are going somewhere far away though, it would be less expensive I think to take Ryan Air or another flight service. Good luck and happy studies!

When you finish up you could take a trip to the Northern Coast of Croatia or even Split on the Dalmatian Coast and travel south by bus to Dubrovnik. After some sightseeing around this beautiful city you can fly on to Dublin, Ireland and finish off there before flying home.... Hey! We need all the tourists we can get. But I think you might enjoy both legs of that trip.

I appreciate all your suggestions. I really want to see as much as I can while I'm there. I'll probably try to pull off some weekend trips and we all know that German university students get a million breaks throughout the year. This should give me extra time to travel around. I would like to go up to Russia, but the process of getting a visa, seems like too much trouble.

Thanks again to everyone
