Hi!
Me and 3 friends are planning on hiring a car to take us from South carolina to Miami, and then flying to New York. As this will mean us driving at least a good few hundred miles, we have been warned about some car hire companies charging upto $1 per mile. Can anyone recommend a good car hire company who charge less for miles driven? Also, we will all be 21 at the time, will we get charged more for being under 25? and do we have to add tax onto the advertised price of rental?
Many thanks!

Also, sorry I forgot to ask is there any companies that hire out sat navs? (I know we should get a map, but were girls and used to using sat nav!)
thanks

There are a lot of rental car places that offer unlimited miles and different pick up / deposit locations for reasonable prices. The biggest obstacle will be your age to rent a car. Here are some popular US rental car agencies; you can inquire online about rentals. Search around for discount codes as well to get a better deal. Insurance is a consideration as well; as that could cost you a lot per month if your home insurance does not cover you internationally.

Why not just fly to Miami then fly to NYC saving yourself a boring 600 mile drive and all the hassles and expense that come with renting a car to do it..

We want to drive down to miami so we can stop on the way in Orlando, Tampa etc, afterall thats what the american road trip is all about, although we won't be driving from Miami to New York!
Thankyou Cyntiast for the helpful websites

Let us know what you think of the American road trip when you get back.if you want to experience America stay off the interstate highways by taking back roads, Rt 301 and rt17 are the old eastern north/south routes before the interstates were built, and try to frequent the Mom and Pop restaurants rather than the big fast food chains..Recommend a visit to Ybor city when you are in Tampa, try a Cuban sandwich followed by some Cuban coffee. When in Tampa take a drive over to the beaches west of St Petersburg from Madiera Beach south to Passa-Grille beach, also the Fort Desoto park at the extreme southern end of the island chain has some of the best beaches in the USA
Good luck

If you guys can afford I advise you to include gps into yur package. it was around 10 bucks per day at budget( I dont reccomend budget because they have several hidden charges like liability and other insurances. etc). But it 100% worths. I have driven from ny to dc just like I was in my hometown in Turkey. it is really a lifesaver on long roads .btw dont forget that each extra driver ads sth to the bill.

oh you are girls didnt see it. definetly get gps.

Depending on how long you are hiring for it can work out much better to buy a Sat nav and then sell it when you've finished.
