I am backpacking round SEA over July and August- vietnam and laos particularlu but reeeaaally wanted to see India so booked a 4 day stop over in Mumbai. I was wondering if anyone had any advice of what to cram into my 4 days and if any other cities can be seen in that short time
Thank you very much

Good that you will have 4days of stay in Mumbai. Just be prepared for some rains during your visit.
You can visit Elephanta caves., hill stations Matheran ,Lonavala. Also visit Aurangabad to see Ajanta and Ellora caves though you need to take a night's train ride.

All the best.

4 days is too short a time to visit any other city apart from Mumbai. Spend a couple of days exploring Mumbai and rest of the days you can either take an excursion to Ajanta and Ellora caves or or visit the nearby hill towns like Panchgani or Mahabaleshwar

You can visit Elephanta caves., hill stations Matheran.

The ferry route to Elephanta caves is usually closed during the moonsoon, so that would not be feasible. Matheran can be visited by road, but the toy train route to Matheran would be closed from July till September, again due to moonsoons.
