I'm going to fly into Hanoi and then work my way around Halong Bay then down the cost to Ho Chi Minh.

Want to take in all the major sites. I'm back packing so on a tight budget.

How long would you advise this type of trip should take 2 - 3 weeks I thought????

thank you

I would say for 2 weeks you will need to be selective on which places you want to visit. 3 weeks will allow you to see all the major sites that are of interest to you and also allow some flexibility ie you may decide to stay an extra night at a certain place or you may take a detour for a day. Only through researching travel guides etc will you get a handle on how much time you will need (as a minimum). Good luck with your planning.

I agree with Steve. 2 weeks is about the minimum time to go from HAN to SGN. I took 3 weeks several times and that was perfect. You don't feel rushed and can linger in a city if you like it. Good luck with your planning.

I would def take the 3 weeks to travel from Hanoi to HCMC. The most popular places are mainly down along the coast. Must stops are Hue, hoi an, na trang (if you fancy some beach time) and Dalat. the best and cheapest way to travel would be on overnight buses. Another option would be on an easy rider motorbike trip.a friend of mine did this between hoi an and na trang, a 5 day trip inland to less touristy places. Once you get to HCMC do trips to the mekong delta ( try do a homestay)

Try to see Sapa in the NW Highlands - a 2-3 day overnight train trip. Only area in the country where you see local minorities in native costume all of the time, fantastic rice terraces, trekking through the hills, Russian jeep trips and more. It's cheap and fun and not to be missed. See any travel agent in Hanoi.

I did it in 3.5 weeks which included 8 days in Hanoi - a fantastic city. Further to the above suggestions, don't miss the amazing Cu Chi tunnels which are a day trip from Ho Chi Minh.

The only problem getting to HaLong Bay is what travel shop to use. Competition is fierce for booking tours. Your hotel/guesthouse is sure to sell tours as well as rooms. Many have tour prices posted in the lobby. I would NOT tell the hotel your plans. Get at least 3 quotes for your trip to Halong Bay as you walk around the city. Have written quotes for the tour you want. Then you can ask your hotel about a tour to HaLong Bay. If the quote is too high, you can tell them you have a much better quote from Sinh Cafe or another agency. Your hotel may then match that price. Good luck with your planning.
