panida23 has indicated that this thread is about Thailand

Patong Beach is the most famous beach of Phuket,Thailand. With white sandy beach for sunbathing and crystal clear water for swimming, it is the most colorful place for nightlife in Phuket. Don't miss a chance to visit there if you have a holiday in Phuket.

is this place named after similar sounding Patpong - infamous red light district in Bangkok?

Ao Patong is the worst place in Phuket - crowded and expensive (expecially food) with hundreds of ski-jets and so dangerous to swimming.

Patong (read Pa-Tong and has nothing to do with Pat-pong) used to be the place where Thai people were treated as second class people, and westerners were majority there. Cost of living went up to catch up with 'farang' standard. I didn't feel like being in Thailand for one time that I visited there.

These days, after the tsunami, it's a quiet place where you can see only beach and blue sky. Every Baht you spend become precious for local people. Things become cheap. For example, many tour companies send emails to offer 3D-2N packages to me with the cost of something a bit higher than US$100 for the entire trip including air-tickets, airport transfers, and hotels with ABF plus oriental buffet.

MASSAGEUK, have you ever been impressed (in positive way) by anything Thailand?
