Just had a quick look at the top25 articles of last month January.

Some small differences but two that were enought to mention: Haiti is now in the top, and for the second time Turkmenistan is in there as well.
Now, Haiti will probably be an 'only once' thing, but Turkmenistan for the second month in a row is quite strange, but still nice of course;)

Just to share...no questions this time

Interesting, the big driver for Turkmenistan is the search term "darvaza well" and the terms related to that. Obviously a popular topic that hasn't been discussed too much online. It makes sense to see traffic like this as a request for more information on a topic. Since the people are coming, we'd better give them what they want ! I reckon it would be a good idea to start an article dedicated to the Dervaza Well and flesh out the Turkmenistan article a bit as well (anyone here who's been there care to help??)

Alright, added a guide to the Darvaza gas crater. I'll see if any of the members who have actually been there are able to verify / expand the information as well, since a lot of this information is very recycled and hard to come by. Wikipedia even uses as one of its trusted sources a post that incorrectly locates the crater in Uzbekistan

LOL, that's really extreme, like 1250 on 1 day! I wonder how that happened?
Someone from the States is constantly opening and closing the article I guess haha

That's thanks to Stumbleupon It's sent 2000 visits so far, which is a pretty good result. If a page is a really big hit it can send over 100k visits.

Could that be arranged for all featured articles as well

Unfortunately it's very hard to control what Stumbleupon sends. Even with pages that get good reviews and good votes like the Famous Mountains one, they can still send less traffic - in that case under 500 so far. Possibly that one didn't do as well because of the type of people voting for it - we asked a few friends lol.

There also is a definite preference for articles like this gas crater one. A featured article on Australia might be better quality, but it's not as well suited to the attention span of someone using Stumbleupon. But wacky things like gas craters in the middle of the desert are good fodder. Then again, the New Zealand article didn't do all that bad there, so sometimes it's just hard to know. In any case, it's worth trying to submit then now and then when you feel it is good.
