Hi All,

My boyfriend & I (aged 23 & 24) are coming to California for 2.5 weeks in May 2010 and would really like to rent a car. Unfortunately it seems it will be way to expensive considering the underage surcharge involved.

Can anyone else recommend the best way to travel between LA (where we fly into), San Diego, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Yosemite and San Francisco (where we depart from)? We would have been happy to loop around and drop the car off back in LA and then jump on a bus to San Francisco in time for our flight home, but as I said, the surcharge has made it out of our budget (circa £1100 pp for everything including travel, accomodation, food etc).

Any suggestions would be really welcome!!!

America is not a great place for trying to use public transportation on the trip you have outlined, the train or bus will take you to San Diego and from there a bus to Vegas, where you maybe able to get a tour bus to the Grand Canyon then a bus back to San Francisco and another tour bus out to Yosemite..
I think you need to do a bit more searching for a rental company that fits your needs because doing it all by bus is very limiting on where you can go and what you can do. Do some research on the lesser known rental companies..

Heres your homework =

I think Jim gave you excellent advice. Don't give up on the rental car idea just yet. Keep checking companies. One of them may not charge extra for under 25 yr old drivers. Good luck to you.

PS, if you contact a rental company that doesnt fit your needs you could ask them if they could recommend a place that would,as they are local to LA they have more knowledge on the subject than Google.
