Is there any public transport between petrohue and puerto montt?

There are minibuses the run from Petrohue to Puerto Varas, and then you can grab a bus from Puerto Varas to Puerto Montt.

From Frommers: In Puerto Varas, you'll find minibuses at the intersection of San Bernardo and Martínez that go to Ensenada, Petrohué, and Lago Todos los Santos every day at 9:15am, 11am, 2pm, and 4pm. Andina del Sud, Del Salvador 72 (tel. 65/232811), has daily trips to this area as well.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should also point out that I didn't ever take the minibuses from Petrohue to Puerto Varas (or vice versa). But I was in Puerto Varas and saw the minibuses, so I know they exist.

I did the bus-boat-bus lake cruise across to Bariloche, which was AWESOME if you can afford it.

The boat trip is incredible. Lots of great scenery. The mountains are so jagged and remote. It's amazing. Wear a warm coat, though. I was there in January, which is summer, and it was pretty chilly. We got a little snow, even.

If you are doing the tour, you should be able to book the trip right through to Puerto Montt, can't you?
