hello all...

I have decided to make my next trip Machu Picchu in Peru, the only problem is I have no clue how to get there, I figure I would be flying into Lima but from there i have no clue. I need all the help I can get. Please...any advise would be more than appreciated. I have found some hostels in Machu Picchu itself so I am O.K. there...i think. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Aaron

The closest town to Machu Picchu is Cuzco. From here you can do the Inca Trail or just get the train to Machu Picchu. These activities can be quite expensive compared to the rest of Peru though, so you might want to shop around to find a good price.

My advice would be to check the travel wikis and travel guides posted by other members and clue yourself up about Peru. It's an extremely interesting and diverse country, so you don't want to miss anything you could have seen or done because you didn't know it was there!

You didn't mention when you were going but please be aware of the current problems at Machu Picchu and Aguas Calientes. I'd also recommend checking your countries equivalent to the Home Office and keep and eye on the political situation. Chances are nothing will go wrong but if things start getting a little ugly you don't want to be there, alone and clueless when the shit hits the fan.

Hope that helps you a bit

Hi Aaron,

You'll love it. My wife did the trip some 20 something years ago and still talks about it regularly :) Have you checked out the Machu Picchu guide here on Travellerspoint?! It's quite good!

Yes, from Lima to Cuzco via air ~45mins-1hr. From Cuzco (Poroy Station) to Aguas Calientes by train ~ 3.5 hours. From Aguas Calientes, take a bus ~ 20 minute ride to Machu Picchu! Make sure you hike the Huayna Picchu as well... An awesome view of the ruins from atop of this "Young Mountain". They only allow 400 a day. 200 people @ 7AM and another 200 @ 10AM. Have fun
