I am looking for a group/touring company that travels up the eastern coast of Africa. I would like to start in South Africa and end up in Tanzania or Kenya. Does anyone know of any cheap suggestions on how to go about this? Thanks!

Hi!

As far as I know there is not a budget tour company that runs all the way from South Africa to Tanzania or Kenya which hugs the coast. The infrastructure in Mozambique is so poor that northern Moz is 4 x 4 only so most companies travel via Zimbabwe (or further west) on their way north. You can get tours that run via southern Moz and then cut inland through Malawi and travel along the Lake shore before arriving in Tanzania. They then turn east again towards Dar Es Salaam.

Hope that helps. :)

Cheers, Tania

Thanks Tania for the reply. Any idea of the names? I am not looking for the typical safaring companies....I've already done that. I'd prefer a backpacking group/tour but am having trouble finding one...

If you are going to east Africa, perhaps it is a very good idea to visit SOMALILAND, it is a peaceful new country unlike other part of Somalia it quiet safe to travel there. I have some friends there who will host you free as long as you want.

Hi there,

Pretty much any overland company covers most of the route you are looking for but I am not sure how that fits into your 'not safari' style of travel. Overland trips really are more of a backpacker experience than the typical safari one if you know what I mean but we all have different definitions of the word I guess! :)

Some of the budget companies include Africa Travel Co, African Trails, Oasis Overland, Nomad Tours. There are plenty more but these are some of the cheaper options - google 'overland tours Africa' or similar and you will get quite a list. You may have to join 2 trips together to get Mozambique in but that shouldn't be a problem either. There really are dozens of options! :)

I hope that helps! Cheers, Tania
