Travel Forums Asia Need a hand!

I really need a hand organizing the way i do my itinerary in Asia, so please people, let me know what way you think is best way to do this.

This is the itinerary in the order i had them originally, what do you think?
Also i have some questions on some of them that i will state next to them in brackets.

Departing the UK late November this year.

(One thing to remember is that i want to stay in Chiang Mai for longer than most the other places)

-Fly to Kuala Lumpur

-Overland from KL to Penang

-Fly/Overland from Penang to Phuket - (i've heard the border between Malaysia and Thailand is dangerous, so is it best to fly?)

-Overland from Phuket to Chumphon or Suratthani - (Which would you say is the nicer area??)

-Ferry to Ko Tao for Xmas and NYE - (or one of the other islands if better??)

-Ferry to Chumphon and then overland to Bangkok.

-Overland from Bangkok to Siem Reap, Cambodia.

-Overland to Phnom Penh

-Overland to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

-Overland back to Bangkok via night stay at Siem Reap or Phnom Penh ????

-Overland from Bangkok to Chiang Mai

-Overland from Chiang Mai to Vientiane, Laos. Via night stay at Udon Thani.

-Overland from Vientiane to Luang Prabang.

-Overland from Luang Prabang to Hanoi, Vietnam

-Trip to Ha Long Bay and back to Hanoi

-Overland from Hanoi to Kunming, China. (or fly???)

And then the rest of it from there i can sort out myself, sort of.

Would it be too expensive and take to long to do this though do you think. I mean, we've got time, and money...but we aren't minted and we dont want to waste too much time travelling those sort of distances if their not worth it.

-Overland from Kunming to Beijing.

-Overland from Beijing to Shanghai

-Overland from Shanghai to Hong Kong

-Hong Kong to Macau ferry.

or do you think...

-Overland from Kunming to Macau

-Ferry from Macau to Hong Kong

....will be good enough??

From Hong Kong we will fly to Australia where we will be backpacking around in a camper van.

I cant wait!!

Thanks for all your hep in advance

The part about going from Cambodia to VN and back to BKK and then to Laos and then to VN again???
Really think you need to rethink this itinerary - were you drinking?

Then you go north to N. China and then reverse direction completely to go to OZ? Do you really expect to be taken seriously?

Daawgon,

Are you some sort of numpty?

He made this thread because he needs help with his itinerary, so he knew he had made mistakes with it, that’s why he posted it -snip- !!

To the OP, the only help I can give you is, you shouldn’t want to backtrack on yourself whilst travelling, but if theres no way around it then you have to I suppose. I noticed on one of your previous threads that you want to finish in Australia. So the route to me actually looks okay, apart from the backtracking of course. I cant work out another way around it, seeing as you want to spend more time in Chiang Mai, you will end up backtracking whatever you do.

Maybe someone else has better advice?

Remember if you go overland to Thailand from Malaysia you will only get a 15 day stamp on arrival. Your itinerary has way to much backtracking on it...here's two alternatives:

OPTION 1
KL to Penang and then fly into Thailand so you get 30 days or get a visa in advance to allow a 60 day stay. Spend your time in Thailand for xmas and NYE - Phuket isn't worth it in my opinion, but never been to Koh Tao.

I think you should then go up north to Chiang Mai and overland to Luang Prabang (taking the slow boat), then overland through Laos. Then you can cross into Cambodia and work your way down to the south coast then cross to Vietnam and work north to eventually cross into China.

OPTION 2
KL to Penang and then fly into Thailand so you get 30 days or get a visa in advance to allow a 60 day stay. Spend your time in Thailand for xmas and NYE - Phuket isn't worth it in my opinion, but never been to Koh Tao.

Go up north to Chiang Mai and overland to Luang Prabang (taking the slow boat), then overland through Laos. Then you can cross to Hanoi from Vientiane, work your way south to HCMC then cross to Cambodia then overland back to Bangkok. You can fly to Kunming from Bangkok or even fly to Macau/HK from Bangkok with Air Asia.

I personally think you should do option 2 - makes more sense to complete a full loop of Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.

The way you have it you would have to get at least 2 visas for Cambodia and Vietnam...not a problem for Cambodia as you get them on the border but for Vietnam it has to be done in advance. Also the costs of getting the visas twice is a bit silly when you can do each country all in one go. It will also cut down on travel time and costs if you try and do a complete loop.

If you want to do China, remember the distances are rather large...it depends on what you want to see and how long you want to spend in China as to whether your itinerary will work there!

Hope this makes sense for you!
