hi ive just graduated this year and am no longer a student.
I reallly want to get hold of a international student identity card (ISIC)as i have heard you get some good discounts. I have also heard that some people buy fake ones in Bangkok.
Has anyone ever done this...do they work?? Any other ideas how i can get hold of a ISIC

well... This summer I used my student ID card from my own college. It simply has my picture the name of my college and says student on it. Then unfortunately while traveling I lost that but I had a membership card to something (i'm not positive what its for) but it had my picture and said member on it and I actually got discounts for museums and stuff with that. Some people looked skeptical but many acceptded it.

Even though you're not a student if you're under 26 (i believe that's the age) you can get that same kind of card but it's an international youth card. it will still get you discounts to some stuff.

Hi Louise,

Leah's right, there is a general youth one (IYTC it's called), which will work till you're 26. I think it is well worth the money, particularly if you'll be visiting a lot of museums, etc.. You can find more info about the card here

Cheers,
Peter

You can get fake student IDs in Bangkok, on Khao San road, along with fake press passes, diplomas, rolexs, nikes etc. The problem with the fake stuff is, well, it looks fake.

You're much better off buying the youth card. Or enroll in a night course at your local community college and say you're still a student. I've never gotten much out of my student cards though - they're useful in countries like france and germany for proving you are a student or under a certain age (good for train discounts), but the most use I ever got out it was when I was caught by a tram guard in Prague for not having bought a ticket... I gave him my VERY IMPORTANT student ID card as collateral while I went back to my apartment to collect the fine.

Right.

Khao San is famous for fake cards. The authenticity of ISIC cards isn't usually verified by travel agents. Just the card number is requested.

Some Khao San operators have connections that can also do passports, but this is very risky and costly.

Being an old member at STA where we used to Issue the cards i can tell you this.
Fake cards from Bangkok are easy to spot however thats only if your trying to use it somewhere to where they issue the cards - Like Student fares from STA travel. To the untrained eye they can not tell the difference and will honour the discount.
In terms of difference between the ISIC card and the under 26 card there is actually quite a bit of difference to what discounts are available. You can however if possible go into an STA and they should have guide books to world discounts of the two.
Usually the ISIC offers better deals especially to Airfares.
