How many of us are there?

Travel Forums System Talk How many of us are there?

Hey, maybe its just me but I think it'd be good if you could see how many members are logged on at any one time.

I'm always curious as to how many people go on TP in general, what are the busiest times (what with time differences etc) and actually how many members there are.

Does anyone else think this'd be nice to know?

It would be great to know who's on when - even though I can't think of a single practical reason for it. We do get post alerts and there's no real-time chatting, but still... it must be a curiosity thing.

Yeah, I do too... And in my post regarding a TP Chat room, I mentioned that another online community I visit has a list at the side that tells visitors and guests exactly who's logged on to the site at that particular time and also how many guests there are...

I think it would be great to see who's on and how many guests there are visiting...

I also wonder how many members this community has... Does anyone know... Peter..??

Cheers...

Ok guys, I'll try to get something like this up soon.. the chat's a little more complex, but a list of active users shouldn't be too hard.

And current user count: 24334 with about 1500 new users signing up each month at the moment. Of course, not all of those are necessarily active in the forum, as a lot just use the diary and travel help features.

Cheers, Peter

Not just the numbers of people logged in, but also their names.

If there's "25 people currently logged in" I'm not sure what the value in that is. At least with the names, we can send them messages knowing that they will probably get them immediately.

But just on that Pete, if I'm logged in and am just browsing through the site, at what time do I get a "You Have Mail" message? eg. do I have to refresh the page?

Yeah, anytime you access a new page / refresh a page, it will check whether you have any new mail.

It's a good idea, but there is a bit of a privacy issue here. A lot of people might not want others to know when they are online as well as there obviously being a lot of people online who might not be registered as members.

There's also another problem which I notice a lot on other forums. Sometimes it will say there are 300 people online but in reality, 290 or so are google's bot and there are only really 10

Both of these are not unoverseeable, but there is definitely some development involved in setting this up. Pete and me were discussing this yesterday though and it would certainly be a great new development.

By the way, on average there are about 300 users online at any given time, although in the summer months this has been double that a few times...
