AUD $60/day as a minimum, which allows you to stay in small dorm rooms in decent quality hostels, buy supermarket food to cook your ow meals, take a bus once a week to a next destination, and do a few inexpensive activities (half day boat trip to the great barrier reef). Double that amount if you want to go out partying frequently, do a lot more activities, or stay in private rooms.
It's really hard to say; some people blow through AUD $200/day without blinking, while others manage to stay even below the $60. All depends on how frugal you want to be, and what your expectations are of what you want to do.

Interesting that your coming from the U.K to Australia in July. I take it your a fan of winter?

Perhaps your travelling off peak? smart move

Bottom line is the pound will go a long way in Australia, hostels are a lot cheaper here than
anywhere ive been to in the U.K or Europe. 10-15 pound a night will have you covered, food
around about the same price for a day.

30/40 pound p/day - cheap skate (hostels,campsites,porridge,baked beans,window shopping,free activities)
50/70 pound p/day - middle of the road (hostels, campsites, eggs, toast, eat out, novalty items, liesure activities)
80/110 pound p/day - almost famous (motels,hotels, breaky in bed,eat out,shopping,sight seeing,night life)
120 + pound p/day - high roller (apartments, hotels, own cooking, room service, eat out, shopping, sight
seeing, casinos, night life, all kinds of debauchery)

Rough guide Hope that helps :)
