Hi Karen,

Welcome to the group!!

Sounds like you're pretty much sorted. Know what you mean about worrying the parents but I really do think we'll be fine. There are a lot of people in the same boat travelling around and it's not like Oz is a renouned dangerous country and it's not 3rd world so I think we'll be just fine!! My biggest worry is all the bugs, being short sighted I'm going to freak out in the mornings if I see a black blur on my pillow (which will prob be from my mascara)!!

Can I ask what insurance you went with? I keep going back and looking at different ones but the policies do my head in!

Where did you get your bag from? I'm trying to find a suitable one cuz it suddenly dawned on me when re-reading this thread, how the hell will I lug a massive suitcase around when I'm trying to travel on coaches etc?! So I'm trying to find a holdall style one.

OMG I'm SOOO taking my GHD's!!

Hi Jess,

The bugs is a major worry for me too!!! I think I am worse with things like that the older I get...even ladybirds make me wince!! I think we have just got to remember to check our shoes and under the loo seat :).

I did my insurance with Essential Travel, I think Insure n go were the cheapest but Essential Travel had higher medical expenses and personal liability etc.

I got my bag my Field and Trek, it is a Karrimor Global Gapper 65l with a 15l daypack that is detachable, alternatively another good one is the Berghaus Jalan which you can also get from Field and Trek or Blacks. This one is available with wheels or without. Definitely worth you having a look :)

Do you know roughly when you are going yet and where you are going to start?

It's all getting so exciting!!

Karen x

Cool thanks, I'll check out Essential Travel today. I did have a look at Insure & Go but the reviews I read said they weren't great when trying to make a claim.

Thanks for the info on the bags, will also check that out. I asked my friend about it, as she went last year, she said she made the mistake of just packing loads of stuff into a huuuuge suitcase! So not only was it a biatch to lug around, she ended up having to pay extra because the weight restrictions are lower on internal flights around Oz.... which I didn't think about! I'm going to have to do a serious cull on what I wanted to take :( Altho I'm def still taking my GHD's!!

I have a friend in Perth so I'm starting off there as I'm a bit of a wuss and didn't fancy heading straight to Sydney where I wouldn't know anyone. I've booked an apartment for the first 3 weeks (which was mega expensive imo, but tbh, would have cost around the same to have a private en suite dorm in a hostel!) after which I hope to move into a house share as it's considerably cheaper! {edit - I'm going on Sept 1st! }

I've no major plans though about how long I'll be there and where I'm going next, figure I'll just go with the flow and see what happens - I guess I'm also governed by the budget!! *joy*

You mentioned you're 28, will you be doing the fruit picking for 3 months to get your 2nd year in Oz and then head to NZ? Or will you just see how it goes?

Hey guys,
Sounds like there will be a few people travelling around Sep time to Oz!

I came to Australia on my own as well when I was 21 (also from the UK), and honestly, backpacking is the easiest and best thing I have ever done! I arrived in Sydney New Years Eve, all alone and manage to meet people and get drunk for 2 days, he he!!! I left my bags at the airport and even crashed at some friends house!
-snip-

Personally, I would not recommend Oz intro... perhaps for countries like India or Africa, but on the East Coast its best to jsut travel with the greyhound and make your own experience of your time away... Promise :)

I hope you all have an amazing time... and don’t worry a suitcase will be absolutely fine!!

Cheers,
Kayley

Hi Gail,

Um no think I am just going to continue to NZ as have a few other places to go after NZ. Ive been working out my budget and reckon that i might have to work for a month or 2 in NZ aswell, as going to Canada and NY after which may soon eat my funds! Do you know whether i will be able to get a nz whv when i am in australia?

Like yourself i think that i will hopefully find a house share when im working in melbourne, im sure it will be a bit cheaper..hopefully.

Have you thought about how u r going to get around in oz?

Thanks for your advice Kayley, I think that the greyhound does seem like the best option :)

You have also made me feel alot better about going it alone!

Have you got the travel bug now?? :)

Yes, you can: To be eligible you must: * usually be permanently living in the United Kingdom – this means you can be temporarily visiting another country when you lodge your application.
