Hi sarah

With regards to the bank account as you is only going for 6 weeks i would open an account with nationwide here in the uk they dont charge you to take your money out of the atms in Oz, my mum did this last year and they encountered no problems whatsoever.

If you google ozintro then access there website it tells you lots of info, i guess you need to think about what you want to achieve and see in your 6weeks, I guess you could look at it two ways

1. leave your friend then make some friends in the hostels and travel about for your 6 weeks seeing as much as poss

2. Do the Ozintro week, do and see loads of things in that 1st week with lots of people the same age as you and in the same position, make some real good friends who then you will probablly travel the east coast with,

I would defo reccomend doing cairns to sydney as you will be leaving the wet weather season behind you as you travel south ( as they say follow the sunshine ) also as you dont have that long it would mean you would spendin 1/2 your time getting up to cairns then travelling the same road back seeing the same things, where as if you caught a flight up to cairns which takes about 3 hrs and costs about £100 ( cheaper than transport/accomm/ living costs gettin up to cairns) you could spend longer and maybe stop more times at all the places on the way back to sydney.

I know exactly how you feel about the nerves, i am really nervous yet really excited at the same time, i did work in the south of france for 6 months when i was 18 but that seems like an entire lifetime ago, so this really does feel like the 1st time travelling again, but i am sure that we get there and start having the times of our lives all those nerves and scary thoughts will just disappear ( or thats what i keep asying to myself )

Ok, great I will have a look into that.

Yeah I've had a good look at ozintro now I just need to make up my mind about what I need to do. Will have a good think about it, as I would like to book it soon if I do use that.

I think the Cairns to Sydney route looks the best then. I think the flights are pretty cheap as well so it's looking like that's my option.

Yeah I'm the same, one minute I can't believe I'm doing it and I'm so scared and the next I'm really excited about it. There seems to be so much stuff to do. I've looked into quite alot of stuff in Cairns and that looks awesome! Hopefully you might still be in Cairns at the same time :)

How long are you going out for? I have just graduated from Uni so feel I deserve to treat myself to something and have wanted to do this for ages. I have the feeling I'm not going to want to come back home!

Oh man, it's all sinking in now - just gave notice and told ppl at work... so excited and nervous all at the same time, it's weird!

5 weeks to go and still soooo much to do!!

Anyone have any clues about phone sims when they're out there? Ah that reminds me, I need to get my phone unlocked - another one to add to the list!

cant imagine sims will be any different to here. PAYG, contract etc etc.

we leave 4 weeks on thursday!

still got a million things to do LOL

found a great deal on big bags tho on ebay. 154 litres with wheels/handle etc for £25 :)

so just needa sort out whats going in it now lol

Hi Jess

The sims i looked into was with vodaphone, they seem to have the best deals either PAYG and Monthly, so i think i will be using them when i arrive.

I leave in 10 weeks and i feel just the same as you, i keep making my lists of jobs to do and also getting stuff to go with.
I noticed yesterday that my photo on my driving licence will expire whilst im away, so gonna get the form from the post office sign it and leave here with my mum to sort out nearer the time, good job i noticed as it says you cant apply for it outside the uk.
Also stocking up on any medications from docs, as ive heard it costs about $30 for a prescription in Oz, and i thought the £7.50 here was bad, my GP keeps doing me repeats each time i go so i have a stock to take with me, especially the ones i have to take regualry.

Just a quick note re sim cards, when I got to Oz I went into a mobile phone shop about getting a PAYG sim and was told I was best to go with Telstra, as they have the best coverage. It costs me $30 a month and I get unlimited texts to Oz numbers and 60 minutes calls I think.

Hey Milby - thanks for the heads up on the bag deals on ebay, I still need to get one - def with wheels!

I think I'll get PAYG, I'm not too fussed just so long as I can find something that doesn't cost me the earth in calls so I'll check out the Vodafone and Telstra (thanks Gail and Steve!). I guess I'll find stuff when I get there I'm just trying to have as much info before I go as possible so I'm not wondering around aimless and clueless! For international calls I may just get one of those phone cards but will try and Skype instead since it's free.

Gail - good point about the driver licence thing, I didn't even think of that! All good though, doesn't expire until 2013 - although debating whether to get an International Drivers permit thing from the post office but I've read that you don't really need it in Oz?

Hi Sarah,

My GF and I have just arrived in Sydney, we have been here for just over 3 weeks. It's awesome, so different to back home. We went surfing last weekend, in the middle of winter.
We booked all our travel package through STA in London. It was pretty disappointing. The hostel they booked us into was a disgrace, it was filthy and we felt so unsafe we moved out before the first week was up.
We are staying with 2 girls who did ozinto and they said the week of activities was good although they said that the hostel they use is dodgy as well and they couldnt get out of there quick enough.
If your arriving in Sydney everyone seems to say that the best place to stay is Wake Up, Base or the YHA.
We are both using a Global Gossip sim card that we got through TCP. It's the cheapest call rates we could find. The Telstra one is very expensive.

I hope this helps.
