It's exactly 3 weeks until I leave and as much as I'm excited about it, I'm doing my typical thing of stressing about everything and being in a panic - despite the lists!!

Main concerns are:

  • getting a job out there as I want one asap and preferably a contract one not a week here a week there
  • finding a suitable house share... some of the ads online look more like dating ads than room ads!

Other things annoying me:
Having to get rid of all my [email protected] before I go - I have a lot!
Sorting out bank stuff, it's just a pain in the @rse
and all the nitty gritty stuff like redirecting post, getting a supply of contact lenses - list goes on

I just want the bit where I'm looking forward to it and enjoying my leaving do's!!! Couldn't sleep last night with these stupid lists of 'to do's' whirling around in my head

Hi Jess

I go in 4 weeks and am in a similar state if that's any help. Also, with flat shares I was reading a lot of people share rooms to save money but I'd kind of want my own space. Anyone know any good websites to try for affordable flat shares without having to share rooms etc?

Thanks

Hey all, I've got less than a month to go! I was just wondering if anyone knows what restrictions are like with medicines and cosmetic stuff? I know its really strict with food, animal and plant matter, and dirt even if its on bike wheels and stuff, so if I have say face cleaner or shampoo made from plant extracts (like body shop stuff) will that be ok to take? And medicines, iron tablets and anti acid pills I take from the doctors, do they count as food? Will they not be allowed? Any info would be great!

Jess/Happy Days - it'll all be worth it once you get out here!

Happy Days - try http://www.flatmatefinders.com.au/flatmates-housemates-house-share-accommodation that is a really good website, or Gumtree. Alternatively I've just been looking for somewhere new to live for my last three months in Oz, and have a list of places where you get your own room (with TV and fridge, etc, etc), but have to share a kitchen and a bathroom - a bit like a posh hostel! If you want those details drop me a line.

Thanks Steve. Laura, the australian customs site is really useful about what you can/can't take in and what you need to declare for them to check.

I'm getting very excited now :)/concerned about all the stuff I have to do!

Hi everyone,

we're an english couple heading for oz on november 8th. We arrive in Brisbane on November 10th, early morning. Plan is to head south from there. We've got tickets to see Jack Johnson in Sydney on December 11th, so we'll aim to get to Sydney a few days before. Hoping to do Xmas and NY in Sydney too. After that, money permitting, we want to fly over to New Zealand for a few weeks. Then fly back to oz, maybe Melbourne. We're hoping to get work, either fruit picking or in restaurants/pubs, throughout the whole trip. Be nice to work for a total of 3 months to qualify for a 2nd visa sometime in the future.

Having read this, we're about to set up an aussie bank account. We've still got insurance to buy, but apart from that we're pretty ready to go!!

Does anyone know if we would encounter any issues getting back into Australia after leaving for NZ? Read somewhere that you need to have £3000 in your bank. We will have on first arrival to oz, but probably won't have by the time we return from NZ.

We'd be happy to meet up with anyone from here for a coffee/beer/chat.

Sean & Lindsey
