Do you mind if I also jump in on this one?! It's so nice to hear about ppl heading over that haven't just left school. I'm turning 30 this year and am also of the thinking - it's now or never! I applied for my visa earlier in the week and had a confirmation the next day, so that's all sorted and I've booked my flight now too but there's so much more to think about and reading what you guys have been sorting out is very helpful.
Louise - handy tip re specsavers! I didn't realise that and was trying to figure out how I was going to cart a year's worth of bloody lenses and solutions around with me!
I'm def not the back packing type (feel like I'm too old or rather stuck in my ways to be slumming it) so I'm gonna have to drag that suitcase around with me everywhere but at least I'll have my creature comforts (don't have the hair or the face to be cutting out the products!!)
Its great to hear from you, im at work at the mo, so just quickly sending this too you, but will be home about 6ish if you would like to chat further,
Cool thanks Gail, would love to chat, although don't get home till about 7pm thanks to working in the city! I'm supposed to be working too but all I can think about is Oz and it'd be nice to finally chat to people about it as my friends don't want to hear it!!
I was reading through the full thread and see finances come up a lot, it's hard to juggle between saving and spending money on the things we'll need out there as well as sorting flights, accommodation, insurance (which I still need to do!), ugh and the phone set up - minimising all the DD's that'll come out of the UK account while we're gone... it just seems the list is endless and my mind is buzzing!
Can't wait though, I'm on a week by week count down!!!
Hi Jess, glad to hear there's a few girlies of my age taking Aus by storm this year! So when are you going? Lou Xx
They won't know what hit them!!
I'm heading out 1st September, starting off in Perth. I thought, even though we all may be starting off in different areas it'd be good to keep each other posted on maybe what we discover in each area, so when we swap around (or sometimes bump into each other) we can pass on our knowledge of good places to stay/find a job/bars to go to etc?
Just sent off all my details for the Visa, cost me $230, lets just hope it comes back saying that everything is ok xx
Good luck Gail, i've got my fingers crossed for you. Let me know how you get on. Jess I think it's a great idea to keep in touch, tips for jobs, adventures, partying etc. Once we're out there we'll have to arrange a meet-up somewhere fabulous to sip cocktails and swap travel gossip! I think i'll be heading out a couple of weeks after you, and i'll be going straight to the east coast i think so when you get to that side you'll have to let me know xx
Did I see somewhere on this thread about one of you applying for an aussie bank account online? Can you do that or will do you be doing it in person when you're there?
Yep, i'm going to set one up before i go but not just yet. They charge monthly amounts unlike our banks, it's only about $5 a month but i don't see the point in starting to pay that just yet so i'm going to do mine in august. Doesn't appear too difficult to do online. You can do it when you get there, i think you just go into a branch of the one you want within about four to six weeks of arriving with your passport etc and set one up. I've been onto a few aus bank websites and the instructions are really straightforward whether you're doing it here or once you arrive xxx
