Do it. I am 40 and if I were not chained to my job here in Washington, DC (because of travel related debts!) I would be right there with you comrade! Anyway its Australia, you will make friends every 25 meters...

I have to agree with everyone here - if you want to do it just go for it. And you still qualify for the 18-35 tours like contiki if you want to go down that path!;)

One thing to remember is Aus and NZ in particular have a great reputation for loving travellers so your age wont matter - if you are loving their country they will love you!

Of course you are too old
Now get your arse on that plane
God's country awaits.

Just do it as you want. If this is your dream never give up in your life no matter how old you are now.

Personally I think if you have to ask this question then you are too young to start yet!!

I got back into serious world traveling 2 years ago when I was 45. I was going regardless of what anyone else thought. It's my trip, my experiences and ultimately my life. I've actually found that its more fun traveling now than it ever was when i was in my 20's. I have more money, I'm less stupid..slightly, and I can relate to so many more things that I experience. I can still hang with the 20 somethings, but the 40 somethings are interested and envious of what I'm doing, and you can have much more meaningful conversations with them. In hostels the 20 something guys tend to admire me for doing this at a later age, and the girls like to hang with you because you are "safe"

He Jaykay,

Gewoon gaan!!!!

I could not agree more with all comments and your question certainly makes people react.

Being 37, I just travelled 6 weeks to NZ and had an absolutely fabolous time.
Also I got really admiring/jealous reactions from friends, especially the ones who are bound to changing dipers.

Travelling is really ageless and it will only be a problem if you consider it yourself to be a problem. In hostels the age might be a bit younger but for example in the mountain huts they were really all kind of ages.

And I agree, partying like you are 34 is really very different after 35 ;)

have a great trip

and, did you already book your trip???

He Johan,

Don't worry, I am 33 now, and you will meet lots of backpackers way older than you and I!
Partying is just part of it, but necessarily a thing if you don't want to. Lots of people just go, book plane tickets and see where the wind takes them. I am 33 and still feel young!

Have fun
Michael.
