It is possible to own a house and travel. My boyfriend and I have a house and we're leaving for six months in May. We have renters in there now. A nice family of four and they are keeping the house very nice. It is usually very easy to find someone to rent your house as people are always looking to rent since no one is buying houses! It does take a little bit longer to get everything orginized when you have a house but I think its well worth it to have something to come home to or to own property. Its also nice to have renters because you can charge more than the mortgage and use the extra to cover maitinence costs for the house!

Buying a house is like: the final nail in the coffin with the tombstone that reads "I'm never going to escape this place".

depends if you can afford to buy it. I mean, allowing for interest rate fluctuations, it'll still work out sheaper than renting.
When you're not there, just rent it to a friend. Not so easy to do if the place isn't yours though.
I say.... Buy - buy.
