Hi ShEpS - when do you arrive in Chicago? There are many things to do in the city year round but late spring begins the festival season. About every week or two there is an event happening - Jazz Fest, Blues Fest, Taste of Chicago and many more.

Also check out the wiki page: Chicago

Chicago has alot going on, when exactly are you planning to visit?

Here are some really good hotel suggestions: Allerton Hotel, Whitehall Hotel, and Sax Chicago.

Thanks for the replies, we arrive in Chicago 10th august for 3 nights. I've been reading through the wiki page and there's lots of useful information so thanks for that. I'll be sure to check out the hotels you suggested.

From what we have researched so far I think we'll be doing some of the usual tourist stuff such as going to visit the sears tower as well as checking out lake michigan. Also the cubs are playing away when we're in town so we plan to go and see the whitesox play so we can get some baseball action whilst we're in the states :D

i can definitely say do NOT consider the Travelodge on East Harrison Street, The website photos look great but... Having stayed there not all that long ago, it was the pit of despair. I'm not sure where the rooms shown in the photos are located in the building, though I'm guessing nowhere. We had a very moldy window A/C unit, little 13" TV with broken rabbit ear antenna, sheets of questionable cleanliness, thread-bare blankets with multiple burn holes and stains, filthy carpeting and the list goes on. It's a "renovated" ex-indigent hotel - again, not sure what they renovated... A rather strong "haven't bathed in a month" odor permeated the halls and rooms.

I can recommend the Congress Hotel at the south end of Grant Park. They do offer some good online rates regularly.

At the moment, you're arriving in between festivals, etc. But, it's still early so not all events are on the calendars yet. August 14-15 is the Chicago Air and Water Show. (Falls just outside your 3 day window.)

Thanks for the tip on the travelodge we'll definately avoid staying there :) Some of the hotels you have suggested are very nice, however they may be above our intended price range. We havn't decided on a budget yet for the trip but I'd imagine we may look for cheaper options.

Also as you mentioned the air show will be just outside of our stay, but hopefully maybe some other festival or events may get scheduled for when we're in town.

Thanks for the help so far.

As an alternative to a hotel stay, you might be interested in the H.I. Chicago Hostel. It is located on the NW corner of Congress Parkway and Harrison Street. It's still within walking distance to Grant Park, the Loop area, etc. (It's actually just "kitty-corner" from the dreaded Travelodge.) There is an additional $3.00/night charge for non-HI members but their rates are quite reasonable.

I do know people have made comments in other Chicago threads saying they had stayed at the hostel and were pleased with the accommodations and services. (I've only looked through their windows as we've walked by on several occasions.)

Thanks again for the reply Isadora and all the help so far :) I've been busy lately so have not had a chance to do any further research into our trip. Im going to check out kayak.com to look for other hotels available and to get some ideas on prices etc. We will be staying in hostels during our trip so may consider HI hostel in chicago. However after a 12hr flight from UK we may opt for a little bit more luxury in the form of a hotel
