I am going to Belize at the end of May with my friend. We are trying to do this as cheap as possible, so hostels are a must. Also, it seems that all the dive packages are outrageous! Does anyone know any cheaper places to go? And is bringing and sleeping in a tent a bad idea? Any help or advice would be awesome.
Where are you going?
It's always better to pick dive shops on the ground. You don't need a package. There are plenty of dive shops competing. I assume you are talking Caye Caulker or San Pedro.
If you are talking Placencia, then there is far less competition, as I recall.
Belize, which I like, is not the greatest budget destination. It's not as cheap as, say, Honduras. If you are only after diving, that would be the place down there.
Don't lock yourself into a package. Comparison shop when you get down there.
On San Pedro, I like Ruby's. If you are hostelling, there are cheaper options walking out of town past the soccer field.

From what I have read, I need to take a ferry to Ambergris caye. That is as I have gotten. I have hears that's the best place to be.
Ambergris, or San Pedro is a great little Caye. There is actually a place to pitch your tent for cheap and it is well populated and well used. You can even rent a tent there.
Yes, you have to take a ferry. There are two ways to get there. From Belize City, or from Corozal. It depends which way you're going down. Through BZE obviously that ferry, from Cancun take the Thunderbolt out of Corozal.
So I can take a ferry from cancun?! How long does it take? Also, is the campsite on Amber?
NO, you cannot take a ferry from Cancun...But if you fly into Cancun, youcan take a bus to the border of Mexico and Belize, the town just on the Belize side of the border is Corozal. And you take the boat from there. Saves you four hours more trip to BZE.
