has anyone continued with their usual fitness regime/routine as they're travelling? was it hard to do? any tips?

I suppose you can go for runs almost anywhere. I go to the gym about 3 times a week and if I don't weight creeps back on.. so wondering how I can keep this up whilst I'm travelling or should i just think 's*d it' i'm going to have fun and deal with my tight jeans all the way round?

I never follow my standard routine while travelling. Generally I am doing very active things while I travel. Even if I am not and I am just touring a city I walk everywhere. Walking gives you a better feel for the city as well. Generally I would walk 6-9miles which is a lot. Depending where you are traveling the food is generally of healthier quality or on the other side, not wildly available. Lunch maybe just a bannana and orange from a streetcart.
On my last trip of 4 months I hiked and climbed in Nepal for 2 months and travelled through Jordan, Israel and Egypt. It was a very active few months and even though I did not get sick once during the trip I lost approximately 30lbs.

I agree with Boreal, walking is the answer! The street is my gym while traveling. I also think traveling in a hot country works wonders. Avoid cabs and tuk tuks, and increase walking and stair climbing to increase metabolism. This way, I always come home pretty lean (and you should see the way I eat!)

I don't sweat when I walk, so I thought lately, that only SPRINTING works. I don't even feel like I am burning calories when I am biking, so I am not doing this fast enough.

While on the subject, what alcoholic drink has the least calories? I'm thinking Gin Tonic, but I am a vodka orange guy. Beers are cheaper, but I didn't have a drink in 5 weeks. I miss the bars, unless they start serving green tea in martini glasses, I'd have to stay home.

i usually end up gettin the shits so lose some wight. Thailand i lost a stone in 3 weeks. India a stone after 3 weeks., Costa Rica half a stone in 3 weeks (i needed to lose it anyway lol after puttin loads on making up for india/thailand).

i do drink alot when away so that helps me not lose too much. basically depends if a get 'toilet troubles'.

When I returned from my first short trip to Rome - 5 days - I was stunned to discover that I had lost 4-5 lbs (approx 2.25 kg). Why? It had to be all the walking, walking and more walking. Also, I did not feel that I could waste a lot of time over meals. Nonetheless, I more or less lived on pizza, wine and beer, hardly a weight loss diet.
Every subsequent trip has resulted in an equivalent weight loss, almost none of it gained back when I returned home.
Result: From 175lbs (79.37kg) in 2006 I am now down to 140 lbs (63.50kg).
Next trip, Paris, October 2010.
Will foies gras and French bread keep the weight on?
Can't wait to find out.
Jeff
