Hi all. Me and my friend are booking our gap year this weekend. We will be leaving around october time to Thailand for 1 month and then Australia for 11 months. I was just wondering where are the best places to vist in Thailand? We will be arriving in Bangkok first but are unsure where else we could go. We want to go to one of the full moon parties, So if anyone could also recommend wheres best to go for the full moon party in Thailand I would appreciate that. Like I said, we start in Bangkok but have to make sure we end up back in Bangkok to get our flight over to Oz. Any help will be appreciated. Regards, Lee.

Pattaya has pretty beaches and temples. The night life there is pretty amazing too. There are plenty of clubs and bars on the street. Small mom and pop restaurants are very cheap and good too. You can buy tickets to see several shows here (the famous transgender singing and performing, some other sex shows if you are interested 18+). You can probably spend 3 days here.

You can also go to Chiangmai. It's another big city in Thailand.

When seeking advice it is helpful to give some indication as to your interests eg beaches, nightlife, trekking etc. Your reference to 'gap year' indicates young. Desire to attend a full moon party indicates nightlife partytime. Reading the travel guides on this site and others will provide a wealth of info. For a full moon party the most popular destination is Koh Phangan which can be combined with a visit to Koh Samui and/or Koh Tao. If you have 1 month then I would definately take an overnight train(2nd class aircon) to Chiang Mai (trekking, 1 day trips eg Golden Triangle, Elephant riding/river rafting,Doi Suthep temple). Pai is north of CM and receives positive reviews. Then return to Bangkok. Krabi and Ao Nang are well visited. If you decide to visit Phuket then I would recommend a trip north to Khao Sok National Park and/or a 1 day trip to Phang Nha. I have refrained from mentioning market places as they are everywhere but one that will blow you away, if your in Bangkok on a weekend, is Chatuchak Market. Recommend you do any shopping for clothes on your last day or two in BKK before departing for Oz. Pratunam area is excellent value. I bought a s..tload from there for my daughters. I visit a friend in Pattaya each year but I don't swim at any beach there (only Koh Larn). There are travel guides on all the places I have mentioned, so if a place takes your fancy then google it and read info from other sites as well as travel blogs. For accom. and reviews I recomm. this site as well as Travelfish and Tripadvisor. I would assume your itinerary is going to be planned around the date for the full moon party so best to work that out first and then go from there. Send me a PM if I can further assist (AFTER your've done some research). Happy planning.

I was in Thailand 2 years ago. We did n't stay in Bangkok and went to Chiang Mai (northern part of thailand) it's beautiful and we loved it so much. It' not resort beach area at all, but you can ride elephant, do rafting on the river, hike and still go to the market at night. I highly recommend it.

My word is too for avoidin pattaya. I stay'd there 7days. I barely knew who i am after that. Its just too krazy place.

I personal faworite is Koh Phangan Island tho. Very very nice. From one point it is calm and relaxing place and there is also very good nightlife + fullmoon party.
