How easy is it to travel on trains in OZ?

Or do you have to book far in advance?
...which is difficult for us backpackers.

Any advice is gratefully appreciated! Thank you!

easy as,but they only really go to the major centers
now there is a train line going up through the middle to darwin as well,
you dont usually need to book too far in advance but it might effect the price slightly.
take a good book the distances are big
good luck

hey, i live on the east coast, down near the capital and there are trains that go through New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, Queensland and Victoria, stopping at small towns as well as the major cities.
They also have backpacker rail passes.
If your planning on heading that way, check out countrylink.com
Hope it helps.

Cheers,
Kelly

Sydney is the capital of New South Wales. The NSW Railways (countrylink) do offer discounts if you book in advance. I think it could only be one or two weeks in advance.

The trains are very comfortable. There's really beautiful scenery along the way, especially up the NSW north coast, if you travel during the daytime. ;)
