Hey guys :) kind of a broad topic, but I'm planning to go to Australia at the end of may until the end of August to fill in my gap year!

I was wondering though, aside from flight costs, how much would I need for the 3 months in terms of money? I'll be looking to stay in backpacker hostels, I'm not too picky on the quality, and I want to get involved with a few things that Australia offers, I've been recommended surfing lessons, so along those lines :) but I'm more about the night life the major cities has to offer.

Also! I was thinking of landing in Melbourne and leaving from Perth, any thoughts? I don't really want to see all of Australia, but I want to get a good handful in :) Thanks! Tom

Melbourne is a great city, and a good place to begin your backpacking stint in Aussie. I recommend the Greenhouse Backpackers, although it is a little pricier than some options, but I had a great time there, even extended my stay longer than I had planned :) They include lots of free things like city tours on Mondays, pancake breakfasts on Sundays etc etc. Oh, and theres a pub crawl for just a few $$ on Thursday nights which sounds like your kind of thing!! The end of May will be heading into the cooler more wintery weather in Melbourne though, so if you're after the sun then that might change your mind. Anyway, just a few pointers to get you started, feel free to PM me if you're after any specific info!

What kind of things do you want to see in Australia? Starting in Melbourne in May will be cold, my advice would be to do the great ocean road and then head up the East coast to catch some sun. Not sure about leaving from Perth, it's on the other side of the country - is there anything you wanted to do over that way?

@ Hey_Monkee

Very helpful mate thanks a lot, i'll give it a look :) and thanks for the offer i'll definately PM you if I anything comes up!

@ Timtravels

Mainly I want to experience the night life and see the big cities, but I wouldn't pass up seeing some wildlife :)
My Uncle travels a lot and he recommended Melbourne-> Perth, so there isn't anything in particular I wanted to do in Perth, but I was going to go around the country Anti-clockwise. So where would you recommend landing/leaving? Catching some sun definately sounds like a good idea. I want to book ASAP before prices start rocketing!

Thanks a lot :)

For nightlife and cities the East coast is a good place to be, Melbourne to Cairns will give you a good variety on different types of towns.

Perth was nice, but it's a big distance to travel to go there. If you were keen on the area around Perth (which is awesome) then it'd be worth heading over from Cairns, I found as a city by itself it's fairly small and quiet.
