For Bkk, there's no need to book the accomodation in advance. Just walk along Khaosan Road and Soi Rambuttri. There are a lot of guesthouses. I would suggest Sawasdee Hotels and Green House. You can look into www.khaosanroad.com for hotels in Bkk.

Fiona,
No need to book rooms in advance anywhere in Tland during May. After BKK, I suggest you hit Chiang Mai if you are interested in hill tribes, trekking, elephants, etc. Or head for the southern beaches. I would check once there which side is having better weather. I suggest Krabi and the surrounding area if the Phuket side is sunnier. Railay Beach is about perfect. Samui/Phangan if the gulf side is having more sun.

Tland can be reasonable on prices, esp. in May. I figure you need $50/day single, perhaps $60/day for both of you. Stay in fan rooms when possible, eat where the locals or BPers do. Stay away from the beer! and you won't break your budget. Good luck with your planning.

And you should try Pai once you are in Northern Thailand.

id recommend heading north to chiang mai and the surrounding area to experience the culture, and its a heck of alot cheaper than down in the south...although if your wanting to get a nice tan and experience the beaches, sea food and good old night life then your better to head to the south..i fell in love with ko samui, wasnt as expensive as phuket but wasnt cheap either!!phuket was basically the thai version of "magaluf, blackpool and amsterdam" all rolled into one and bloody expensive too...you wouldnt be missing an awful lot if you dont go there....

good luck!!

me and 2 friends went through Thailand in 2007 and stayed in Phuket for a few days where we had a right blast. It's true there is less to see and do culturally but we used this place as our chill out/party days, and i dont think you can find anywhere better than here.

Probably better for males rather than females as the nightlife revolves around getting hammered and of course the girls, who are everywhere. All having girlfriends at home, it actually got annoying constantly being hassled by them. I would recommend it for single men but not couples, although you do see them having a good time there too.

Chang Mai in the North and Krabi in the East are probably more suited to couples. From Krabi you can go to the Phi Phi Islands (well, you can from most places), I could see a couple having a beautiful time there.

Thailand is generally very safe and friendly place but it would be prudent to take your Bangkok accommodations in Sukhumvit area. Good place to shop, dine and you will find plenty of fellow travelers.I found accommodations in Bangkok pretty incredible too....reasonable, clean and decent.

Krabi is in the South
