What's up fellow travelers? I apologize if a thread on this trip already exists. I searched on the forum for over 30 minutes and I couldn't find anything.

I will be in South East Asia this summer ( late May to mid August) and I would love to do the most talked about trip from Bangkok to Siem Reap ( by land) during the first weeks of June. I have read a lot of great information/tips online but I was wondering if any of you have ever made this journey? how was it? what is the best advice you can give me?

I will most probably be making this trip alone so if any of you guys are heading this direction around this time and are looking for a travel companion, I would be more than willing to travel with you.

Thanks for your time :)

It is better for you to get a Cambodian visa in your home country before you travel for USD20 if I'm not mistaken. You can do VOA at Poipet but they might charge you a little bit more expensive.

Unless you can get a Cambodia visa for $20 in your home country, I would not bother. They do try to overcharge you at Poipet border, but you can deal with that. The road is much better now and the journey is not such an ordeal anymore. Here is a good resource for all things Cambodia. Read the section carefully that details the overland journey from BKK-Siem Reap. Good luck with your planning.

I will definitely keep you updated. I think I am going to get a Cambodian visa before I leave for Thailand. That way, I won't have to deal with the hassle on the border.

Hi. My boyfriend and I did this back in July of last year and I'd say it was worth the trip. Bought it as part of a package because we got suckered into being taken to a travel agent by our tuktuk driver. It actually turned out to be totally worth it though because we got transfers from Bangkok to Siem Reap and back, lodging in SR for 3 nights, sleeper train to Surat Thani, ferry to Koh Phangan, and lodging during the full moon party all for about $200 a piece.

The mini bus guy picked us up at our hostel super early. Like 7am. I think it was like a 6 hour(ish) journey with a few stops on the way. Could have been longer. I was hungover. Anyway, near Poi Pet we picked up a "guide" who sorted out the visa stuff and walked us across the border. I think we paid around $40 for a visa, which is too much. Once in Poi Pet, we got off the bus, walked across through customs, and hopped in a taxi that was waiting for us along with a couple other backpackers. Then it was like 3-4 hours to Siem Reap. It was a super full day.

The ATMs in Cambodia pop out USD but everyone takes baht as well. Don't bring Cambodian money to Thailand (or anywhere else except as a souvenir) because it's pretty much worthless. Cambodia is much cheaper than Thailand. I bought a pack of smokes for 20 cents USD. No joke.

Also, when you go through customs back into Thailand, your visa is only good for 2 weeks instead of the 30 days you get at the airport.

Hey Lizziebeth,
Thanks for the helpful information. I've heard a lot of people say that the trip is worth it so I am definitely psyched. As for the 30 day visa, I'll be in Thailand for the entire summer so I'm not getting the 30 day visa at the airport. I am getting 2 tourist visas ( 60 days each) at the Thai Embassy before I leave for Thailand.

Also, does anyone know if I can go in and out of Thailand as many times as I want as long as my visas haven't expired??

Quoting bakpakk

No. As soon as you leave Thailand, you invalidate that visa. It does not matter if that visa had 1 day or 50 left, they cancel it when you exit Thailand. Keep that in mind when planning your trip.
