£1,000 is roughly AUD $1650, or less than a third of the required finances for receiving a working holiday visa. With an average backpacker budget of AUD $60/day (for which you can stay in a small dorm room in a reasonable quality hostel, buy supermarket food to cook your own meals, and travel around by public transport a bit), this much money will last you just under four weeks.

This is not to say that it's completely undoable; immigration officials aren't known to actually check up on finances when you arrive in the country, and you personally could be very good at living frugally and stretching the money, or at finding well paying jobs left and right. There have been people on this forum who've done this. Yet for the average backpacker - especially one without a lot of experience - I'd strongly recommend against it.

ok, cool, appreciate your honesty. i may have the option of starting in perth where my dad's friend can get me a job. would you agree this is a good starting point as employment will help me find my feet.

i have the $5000 amount (whatever it is) that is required, i'd just rather not use it all. if i can work and get away with a grand it would be best case scenario.
