Hi

I'm looking to visit Sydney for the first time at Christmas / New Year. I know you have to book hostels early to secure accommodation, but I just wondered...how early is early?!

I've been in touch with a few hostels and they all seem pretty similar (and they all want a minimum 7/10 night stay). Ideally I'd like to stay at one of the YHA's, but rooms don't become available to book until the end of June. Would people advise to book somewhere else now, or are the YHA rooms pretty easy to book ?

If anyone else has hostel recommendations over Christmas / New Year I'd appreciate it.

Cheers

There's quite a few YHA's in Sydney, so you'd probably be okay. The newest one down at the Rocks would probably be awesome on NYE!! Another hostel to consider would be Wake Up, which is right next to the YHA at Central Station. There's a rather popular bar in the basement as well :)

I would book asap. When I stayed in Sydney over Christmas and New Year '04 I booked in the July and availability was tight then. I stayed at Base which was in a good, central location and I had a great time there.

Sam I Am - The Rocks is the one I've got my beady eye on!
Wake Up seems to have decent but mixed reviews, so thanks for the recommendation :)

razzaefc - YHA hostels are everywhere, they seem to have consistantly good reviews but are a bit more expensive than the others. Have a look at the website: http://www.yha.com.au

bex76 - Thanks, I've looked at Base, looks good and cheap too.

Do you know if YHA put the prices up at xmas or are they more or less the same. I'm thinking as long as I'm on the ball with the YHA ones I should be ok if I hold out for The Rocks or Central Station (friends have recommended both)? If not I could fall back on Base or Wake Up.

We are going to be in Sydney for New Year. A friend of mine has just came back from 7 weeks in Oz, he recommends The Rocks also.

My partner and I are looking to buy a camper so wondering if we should book a camp site around the Sydney area for new year time.

It's weird having to get sorted in advance usually I'm hopelessly last minute for everything!!

Sooo Excited for our trip 17 weeks to wait not that I'm counting

There was a big thread here last year where one of the members organized a camp out just outside of Sydney on one of the campsites. I think nearly 20 people joined him in the end (we ran it as a featured thread for a while). It's here. There's probably some useful info there for you, and if I'm not mistaken the owner of the campsite helped out too.... yes, just re-read some of the thread and the owner is a member: Lane Cove. If a few of you get together to make this happen again this year, let us know and we'll set it up as a featured thread again so others can join you!

Thanks Sam I Am,

I have just had a good mooch through those posts from last year. Lane cove sounds perfect, there's availability for new Year week. Oh my I wanna book up now EXCITED

I will do a bit more research but I reckon we would be up for organizing a TP meet!! I am new to the big worldly travel scene. Steve ( beta half ) and I organize motorbike meets around England and Scotland. So we are pretty good at organizing group events.

Can't wait for the adventure to start!

Cheers

No worries at all then! :) Let me know if you start a thread to organize one and I'll do the work on this end ;) Happy planning!
