Help with National Insurance please?

Travel Forums General Talk Help with National Insurance please?

Hi All ye UK citizens,

I'm taking 12 month leave from work this summer and traveling the world. Just wondered if it is possible to pay a minimum to national insurance while away? if it's worth it?

Cheers for any advice

Kaz

It is possible to declare yourself as self-employed and pay a monthly NI Contribution by UK bank direct debit.
You will have to do a Self-Assessment on arrival back, or if you're away when the declaration deadline comes - just fill it in before you go and get someone to post it off for you in the UK. There'll be no tax to pay if you declare and can prove you've earned nothing.
