Anyone from the U.S. want to recommend either a passport card or a book for travel abroad. I have been using the book, but will take suggestions.

what's a passport card? am I missing something?

nevermind. apparently the card is only for non-flight passage b/w the U.S. and neighboring countries. I was mislead. apologies.

You are correct, the passport card is only valid for non-flight travel to Mexico, Canada and some Caribbean Islands.

But - it is an internationally recognised ID. If you loose your regular passport or have to apply for a visa in a foreign country the passport card is a very nifty thing to have and can save your behind. Go get one, IIRC it was only 10 USD.
