Trains for me, I love them.

longest journey so far was Calcutta to Bombay non-stop. All my friends thought I was mad, but I loved it. It's like being in a social club with people getting on and off all the time. Great conversations, shared food, and a real feel for the country that you don't get on a plane.

Another favourite is the overnight from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.

My late grandfather was a railwayman years ago and my mother was brought up living above a station , so I suppose it's in the blood.

I'm also a train person (if for no other reason that i travel shed loads and don't fly, so options are limited), but i also like ferries/boats. Have done any number of long and bizare train journeys, and many people look at me a though i'm completely bonkers - probably for good reason - that i "subject myself" to such an ordeal when i could fly. (to me, it's perfectly normal to do an approx 40hour round trip from here to London just for a 2hour meeting, and on occassions, twice in the same week with other stuff as well)

In addition i love cycling, especially in mountains areas, and hitch hiking can be absolutely brilliant if you aren't in any sort of rush, and i try to do at least one long hitching journey every few months at a minimum. i also like walking/hiking, although generally for enjoyment/commuting rather than as a main mode of transport.

I've actually found camels to be much more comfortable to ride on than elephants

I love driving...there's something very theraputic about it. It let's me sort out stuff that I would otherwise keep pent up inside. But that's more for city stuff.

For long distances I like plane rides.....and if I were to dream...I would say travelling first class on a plane for any travelling I'd be doing

Trains are great for semi-long distances. You get comfort (depending on the country) and you get to see the countryside and scenery.

Katie ;)

Very difficult for foreigners to get a driving permit in China (the test questions are all in Chinese for a start), so I haven't driven a car for the past couple of years Nevertheless, I must agree that driving can be very relaxing
