Scared but excited! I have decided that I will finally travel to Vietnam (dreaming about it for several years) and surrounding areas. If I do not find someone to go with, I am willing to go on my own, but I must admit, as a single female who has never travelled I wonder about my safety. Anyone have any insights as to the safety of Vietnam (I've heard pretty darn safe)? Also, what would be the best way to find another random traveller planning to go to Vietnam at the same time? I don't need someone to travel with me for long, but for the first week, it would be nice if there were someone else there to make the whole thing less intimidating. thoughts or advice...?
I went to VN 2 years ago, and had a blast. Never felt threatened at all. I was a 46 year old male, travelling with 3 others, but I did spend quite a lot of time on my own. I spent most of my time in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), Hanoi, Da Nang, Hai Phong, and Do Son. I recommend sticking around metro areas like Saigon and Hanoi. You'll have a great time. Get a Rough Guides guidebook. I liked it better than my companions' Lonely Planet guide. If you like, I can email you with the names of the hotels I stayed at. I found the people to be happy that I was there, eager to please, and easy to deal with. And their honesty was very impressive. I would personally feel safer in downtown Hanoi than I would in downtown Little Rock, AR (I'm from Arkansas). I can share lots more info, but would need more specific questions from you. Wishing I could go with you, I sign off...
