Hi,

I'm leaving the first of November but I can't decide between Indonesia or Philippines.
I'm looking for a varied travel experience (mountains/vulcanos, terrace fields, beautiful abandoned beaches, jungle, culture, temples, small villages, one or two-day trekking, etc). Cheap or moderate accomodation, (semi-)backpacking, no diving. And I'm planning on going for a little less than two months.

Any suggestions?

All tips are very welcome!

-Kris

Go Philippines, much compacter country than Indonesia, and has the advantage 90 % of the population can speak Englisch here. Philippines has 18 active vulcanos, the most beautiful shaped one is the Mayonvulcano who erupted just in 2009 An other famous one is the Pinatubo vulcano who has an awesome craterlake now. The Taalvulcona just south of manila is also a mustsee, It,s in the midde of an enormous lake, and you can rent a horse to go to the summut of the vulcano. Very special is the island Camiguin, this island is comprised of 7 volcanos, the highest one is the Hibok-hibok vulcano. Must see is also the rice terraces in the north of Luzon, which are build 2000 years ago. Dont miss the island Palawan, this island is still covered with tropical rainforest, and very special here is the puerto princesa undergroundriver and the limestone cliffs in EL Nido. Unlike other asian country like Thailand and Indonesia,Philippines does not have ancient tempels, but its has many old churches and fortesses built during the colonial area .Abandned beaches you can find in caramoan and palawan. And cheap accomodation around 10 US dollar per night is plenty available. Al the different islands are easy to reach from manila with the budget airlines Cebupacific.there are also fastferrys between the islands.
Enjoy philippines

I have been to the P.I., not Indonesia. I also will vote for the P.I. They have everything you listed plus most speak English. That is a huge advantage over Indonesia. I would check locally before visiting Mindanao however. Good luck with your planning.

well, even tho Indonesia have all that you list (and even more), but still I'll recommend Phils..
since there're too many things in indonesia, and you will get it a lil bit tricky if you have to travel from nias (very west part of indonesia) for the culture thing to ambon (very east part of indonesia) for the volcano thing

I would say Indonesia, just as it has everything you could want from a country so much diversity and so much to see. There is the most amazing landscapes and sights. Mt Krakatoa is one of the most amazing things i have ever seen.

Philippines certainly, because they all speak english at businesses, and the people in rural communities that you want to see all love foreigners very much. Get away from the cities, and the provinces are romantic and nice. Philippines is 7100 islands of beautiful flowers, girls, each sweeter than honey. Research also the many festivals, where the costumes are beautiful. My fiance just visited a volcano. Consider also the hundreds of historic churches, maintained from spanish occupation, great architecture to see. But avoid the cities when u can. Much pollution, begging in places, danger at night - but is it any better in major usa cities? At least in the philippines the banks outgun the robbers. Welcome to the wild wild west

about volcanos... our Taal volcano seems to be showing some activity... yes Mayon is the most impressive with its shape and Pinatubo's crater lake is very beautiful as well..

as per terraced fields, the Philippines has the Banaue Rice Terraces which is a UNESCO site and was carved by the tribes since 2000 years ago... and it is majestic..

there are a lot of less travelled beaches in the Philippines like Caramoan which has been the site of 3 Survivor series (2 from France and 1 from Israel if I'm not mistaken), there is also Pagudpod in the north which has a comparable beach with Boracay, the island of Camiguin also is beautiful, and if you want an exclusive beaches in El Nido or in the posh Amanpulo resort.

For jungle reserves, there is Subic's forests, in Davao and Palawan..

As for temples, that is one thing that may be that we lack because we are mostly a Catholic nation so you'll see more Baroque Catholic Churches that date back the 16th century. The most notable churches are the 4 Baroque Churches that are listed in UNESCO, namely 1. Church of San Agustin in Manila, 2. Church of La Nuestra SeƱora de la Asuncion in Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur, 3. Church of San Agustin in Paoay, Ilocos Norte, 4. Church of Santo Tomas de Villanueva in Miag-ao, Iloilo. Also another is the Baclayon Church in Bohol which is the oldest. The provinces of Ilocos Norte and Sur are filled with these old churches

I go for Philippines a lot of top tourist destination are there many beaches, trekking, rice terraces. I've been there so many times. There are lots of Cheap hotel in Philippines do -snip-. Anilao, Batangas is a very popular spot for diving and snorkeling. It is known worldwide. The waters are teeming with marine life, plenty of corals and amazing diversity of fishes. Sense a relaxing mood while kayaking at the crater lake of this mountain. In Mt. Pinatubo Crater Trek discover hot springs, cool mountain pools, lahar fields and canyons as you take a trip or trek to see remains of towns destroyed by the mudflows.

[ Edit: Sorry, no promos please. ]

I've been to the Philippines but not to Indonesia yet.

I love the place since they are so hospitable, welcoming and good-natured. 7,100 islands of a beauty-filled nature. You should check it out. I am definitely going back there.

Its 7,107 islands to be more precise.... while Indonesia has twice that number.

Indonesia is an islamic country and the Philippines is the only Catholic country in Asia.

I am not a big fan of Filipinos, because I am one. But in all fairness to this breed of orientals, they have style and good taste, things that money can't find. Regarding the behavior of the people, I don't if we have evolved to become Vietnamese or Indonesians. Because some tourist complaining about the locals. I also surprise to hear some tourist saying that Filipinos love taking photos with white people... who are these people? I am sure they get fascinated, but unlike other societies in Asia, they know how to play cool.

I don't expect Indonesia to be amazing. But I do wish to visit Bali. If you talk about Balinese architecture or food, you know what it is! But a Filipino architecture, has less character. I was once in one tourist island, and my heart broke, when I saw that the souvenirs were bought in KHAOSAN ROAD!!! The bars even have a BALINESE night and another bar had a HAWAIIN theme.

But if I am a foreigner, I'll choose the Philippines for two reasons: 1. Not everybody goes there. 2. Its better than Indonesia, because it can be exotic, but not tooo exotic. Well islands are islands, unless you have enough money to stay in a 5 star hotel.
