Those that have been, what did you find yourselves budgetting to for accom/food/travel/misc?

Will be travelling over next year as part of a RTW.

Hi Wittak. I was in Japan in August 2004. I travelled with my brother and we stayed in budget hotels/hostels/ryokans. We stayed in a private room with shared/private bathroom.

First off, I'd like to say that we did not find Japan as expensive as we thought. I found travelling the UK much more expensive.

These are the average prices we paid in Japan (prices in yen).

Food: Bowl of noodles/rice 700-800
Accomodation: 3000-5000 pp twin share
Entry to temples etc: 100-600

Transport depends on each city. I do remember that the Tokyo subway cost us an arm and a leg. If you are travelling between cities, make sure you pick up a JR pass in your home country before leaving for Japan. You save a lot of money that way and get the thrill of riding on a bullet train. Remember, you can make seat reservations for free with your pass (others have to pay for this privilege). I also heard about the Seishun 18 Kippu. Never tried it but it sounds good. Details here: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2362.html

Depending on how budget concious you are, you can do Japan a lot cheaper than us. For instance, I think a dorm room in a hostel is about 2000 yen.

Have a great time and message me if you would like any more information ;)
