Questions about Iran and Money

Travel Forums Africa and The Middle East Questions about Iran and Money

Hello everyone!

Well, I'm thinking about heading to Iran later this summer for two to three weeks. I am male, 33, Canadian and I plan to travel alone.

So, has anyone ever traveled there? Any information and tips worth sharing? What do I need to know?

I've read that in Iran they don't accept foreign bank cards (for ATMs), credit cards and traveler's cheques. Are we expected to arrive with tons of cash on our person (that sure doesn't seem like a safe/wise thing to do)? So, how are we supposed to carry money around safely? What are the options?

Thanks for the help!

Mark

Yes, you are supposed to take everything in cash.

It is best to bring US-Dollars, they are most widely accepted. It is especially important to have some small bills (1 USD and 5 USD as well as 10 and 20 USD).

15 USD will get you very far in Iran (as long as you avoid August the high season). For 2 weeks in summer and being on a tight budget you can plan on bringing around 300 USD in cash, for 3 weeks 500 USD should be enough. That is easy to carry and hide in a money belt or such.

It also makes sense to distribute everything all over and have more than one wallet.

Thanks for the info but the costs sounds too good to be true... $500 for 3 weeks?
Can you please give a little more detail? What are the expected costs? Costs of a room? Food? etc?

Thanks again!

I was there in 2006 (ok, that is a bit back), I travelled in August and everything was booked solid. I ended up spending around 25 USD per day in Iran. Cost of a room was 10-15 USD in a basic budget end hotel (high season prices). Food was around 3-5 USD and transport and entry fees made up the rest. I was initially planning to spend around 15 USD per day and person and if it had not been August I would have made it.

So a budget of around 500 USD for 3 weeks is definitely do-able. It all depends how frugal you want it to be. To play it safe you could bring around 600-700 USD, but if you are a true backpacker I am reasonably sure you won't need that much.
