I was just chatting to a friend of mine who lives just outside Central London - and he tells me that some of the Tourist Info kiosks now have a free 'London Walking Guide' that can be picked up. It's quite basic, but has about 20 or so 30-40 minute walks to, from and past places of historical interest, that might be missed if on an organised trip - and it's gratis.

The hop-on-hop-off bus tours of London are great. There's one company who's name I can't recall (Big Bus Company?) that had a guide who spoke about the attractions as you saw them, as opposed to some other bus tours where you have commentary through headphones.

There are plenty of tours that can take you to Hampton Court Palace, etc.

Just be careful with the London Bus tours. There are quite a few of them and the prices vary significantly. The train travel card is much better value for money.
