Claire, I don't know what kind of laptop you have, but having traveled without one, I recently decided that there are a number of benefits to having my own this time as there are plenty of places these days that have wifi. So I purchased a netbook ( 10 in. screen and about 2.5 lbs). Seems many travelers have gone this route and most have said they loved having their own computer. So I suppose I'm relaying others experiences and not my own. But I cannot see a downside to having at least a mini.

Cant wait to get rid of my laptop when I go on holiday. I go abroad for work quite often and it seems I just cant do without it, but when its break time - I just cant be with it and manage 100% without it anywhere in sight.

We love having ours with us because of the ease of checking things out, making last minute hotel bookings, storing photos, etc, but I think it really depends on the purpose and length of the trip. If it's a two week beach holiday away from work, leave it and go and relax. If it is 6 months around the world take it, and make keeping in touch simpler, as well as giving you some form of entertainment for those occasional boring times!
